Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I consider a Labrador Retriever?
Year after year, Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed in America, for a number of reasons. For starters, they aim to please and are easy to train. When properly socialized as puppies, they can adapt to almost any situation. Labs have outstanding personalities: they are steady dogs and quite gentle. They are renowned gun dogs and retrievers but just as well loved as pets and companions. Labs are great adventure partners on camping trips and other outdoor activities. They do best when they get plenty of exercise, whether it be hiking up a mountain, or playing with the kids in your backyard. Labs are happiest when they're at your side. Although they’re large dogs, many have lap-dog syndrome and will happily crowd the bed if you let them, or try to sit as close to you as possible on the sofa. These qualities make them outstanding sporting dogs and endearing family members.

How can I get a Cedar Hill puppy?
Once a pregnancy is confirmed, we take reservations for puppies. Your reservation is effective once we receive a $200 deposit, and puppies are reserved by sex in the order that deposits are received. We'll notify you when the litter is whelped, and keep you updated with frequent photos and blog posts on this website. About five weeks after birth you will have the opportunity to come to Cedar Hill and choose your pup. If you are unable to make your selection in person, we will work with you to understand the qualities that are most important to you, then select the pup that best fits the bill. Puppies will be ready to go to their new homes at 8 weeks of age.
What does "limited registration" mean?
Limited Registration means that the dog can be registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) but no litters produced by that dog are eligible for AKC registration. This is the breeder's option, and it helps breeders like Cedar Hill protect our breeding program. A dog registered with an AKC Limited Registration is also not eligible to be entered in a breed competition in a licensed or member dog show. However, you can enter dogs with limited registrations in other licensed or member events including: Obedience, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Agility and Earthdog.
What else do I need to know to make an informed choice?
Labs are great dogs, but like any breed, there are characteristics that must be considered before you make your decision. Labs are intelligent, active dogs and require a lot of exercise. If you’re not up for providing regular walks, throwing the ball and playing with them often, this is probably not the breed for you. Labs have short to medium length coats, but they shed quite a bit, so will require an occasional bath and frequent brushing – and be ready to buy a good vacuum. Though they are very intelligent, Labs are a little slower to mature than some breeds and often hold on to their puppy personalities until they are three years old or older. All these quirks are easily overcome with love and a little bit of patience and work, but they must be considered as you make your choice.
